In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) involves fertilizing a woman’s eggs outside her body by combining them with her partner’s sperm in a specialized laboratory. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo is carefully placed into the woman’s uterus, where it can implant and develop into a healthy pregnancy under favorable conditions. IVF is a highly effective treatment for infertility and is suitable for couples facing a variety of reproductive challenges.

Indications for IVF include absent or damaged fallopian tubes, moderate to severe endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), tubal and pelvic adhesions, the presence of sperm antibodies in either partner, male factor infertility, and couples who have experienced repeated failures with intrauterine insemination (IUI). IVF is also recommended when other fertility treatments have not achieved the desired outcome, offering hope to couples struggling to conceive naturally.

Phases of IVF Treatment

1. Ovarian Stimulation
Fertility injections are given to stimulate multiple egg development. Protocols are tailored based on the patient’s condition: long protocol using GnRH agonists, antagonist protocol using GnRH antagonists, or short protocol with gonadotropins. Monitoring is done with transvaginal ultrasound and hormone assays to track follicular growth. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) triggers final maturation of eggs.

2. Egg Retrieval
Eggs are retrieved under short general anesthesia, 34–36 hours after HCG injection, using ultrasound-guided aspiration. This ensures safe and efficient collection of mature oocytes.

3. Fertilization and Embryo Development
The male partner’s sperm is processed and incubated with the retrieved eggs. Embryo development is closely monitored in high-quality culture mediums to select the healthiest embryos for transfer.

4. Embryo Transfer
Two to five days post-fertilization, embryos are transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter under ultrasound guidance. Any excess embryos can be cryopreserved for future IVF cycles, providing cost-effective options for couples.

5. Luteal Phase Support and Pregnancy Confirmation
Progesterone support is provided to enhance uterine lining receptivity. Pregnancy is confirmed with a blood test (Serum β HCG) 14 days after embryo transfer, followed by an ultrasound for confirmation.
